Paper Girls Volume 5 Brian K Vaughan Cliff Chiang Matthew Wilson Books
I found the first volume of the series confusing. It begin in medias res (in the middle of the action) and didn't explain where the foreign/out of time characters were from or what their motive(s) were. Volume two allowed for a bit of character development and we got a sense of the action; volumes three and four did an outstanding job of social criticism, as the 12 year olds from 1988 observed the future and found it strange and lacking in many different ways.Oh to look at our present through our own younger eyes, what would we think? Mr. Vaughan made that happen.
Volume five abandons the social commentary and moves the plot forward. The girls are stuck in 2172 and are trying to figure out a way home, as well as deal with another few issues. The movement of the plot allows the characters to develop more. Despite the fact that this volume takes place in (mostly) 2172, it gets a bit confusing again as characters have moved back and forth through the timeline, encountered various versions of themselves or their opponents. It's a bit more confusing than need be. Perhaps Mr. Vaughan is setting us up for a big reward, or maybe he didn't think every moment through (I'm hoping for the former).
The art is nice.

Paper Girls Volume 5 Brian K Vaughan Cliff Chiang Matthew Wilson Books Reviews
Book came completely clean with no creases!! Absolutely love the paper girl series
Love this series.
Volume V is even stronger than the previous ones.
Excellent story telling, great story for adult or mature readers and really is a great teenage girl read. The adventure never ends. good characters, and story line.
Personally this volume felt more lowkey than the prior ones. Nothing too crazy happens but subtle references to the beginning of the series, as well as set up for the future are planted. Character work is as great as always. Art is beautiful as always. Still recommend the series!
With each successive volume this fantastic adventure grows bigger, stranger, more mysterious, and tenderly queer. I love that I have absolutely no idea where this story is going, but I’m along for the ride with this awesome group of friends for as far as they go, into the future and into the past.
This series is weird and heartfelt, zipping through time rapidly with a core group of protagonists (the titular "paper girls"). As they travel, they pick up associates (sometimes older versions of themselves) and antagonists. It's fun, thought-provoking, and never dull.
Chiang's art is a great fit for the constantly moving nature of the story. Each era has a distinct style, which is important for following the story when characters might be travelling through time multiple times a day.
