First, the description for this book touts it for fans of Kate Morton. I respectfully disagree. While it has some elements similar to Morton's novels - alternating timelines, a mystery in the past, and complex characters, The Woman in the Lake can't compare to Morton's novels. The comparison to Susannah Kearsley is a bit more on the nose, as there are supernatural elements woven into the narrative which are never explained to my satisfaction."Her fingers brushed against something soft and smooth, silk, aged and pale yet still retaining the shimmer of gold.
"A sensation shot through her, recognition and dread and a strange sort of excitement.
"The golden gown came free of its wrappings with a whisper of sound that was like the past stirring. It felt as though it sighed, shivering in Fen's hands. Unconsciously, she held it close to her heart in exactly the same way she had done in her bedroom fourteen years before.
...
"This is yours. Do with it what you think best but be aware of the danger.'"
The novel is written from three different points of view, all connected by the golden gown's affect on them: Fenella in the modern day, Lady Isabella and her lady's maid, Cordelia, in the 1700s. In both storylines, the female characters are in jeopardy from a lover or ex-lover and must go from a place of helplessness to one of strength. Ultimately, this is what I liked about The Woman in the Lake - its theme of female empowerment. The last chapters moved fast towards a triumphant conclusion for both storylines. But my interest was piqued by the Author's Note which revealed that Lady Isabella was based on a real-life aristocrat, Lady Diana Spencer (not that one, but an ancestor of hers). I would wait to research the author's inspiration as doing so might spoil some narrative turns.

The Woman in the Lake Nicola Cornick Books Reviews
The Woman in the Lake
The Woman In The Lake is a tale that spans the eighteenth century to current day Britain. Lady Isabella Gerard was given a dress by her husband; the dress was beautiful resembling spun gold. Her husband was a cruel and brutal man. After a particularly horrific night Isabella asked her maid Constance to dispose of the dress. A few months later woman is found murdered wearing the gold dress.
Fenella Brightwell has a slight problem, she is a kleptomaniac; she really can’t help herself. She has had a problem with stealing things since she was a young girl. Many years ago, while visiting a historic home she stole a beautiful antique gold dress. She left the dress at her grandmother’s house; the elderly woman believed the dress was evil and had power over certain people. When her grandmother passed away the dress ended up in Fenella’s hands once again. Fenella left her abusive husband and started a new life. She begins researching the origins of the dress and discovers Isabella’s story. Fenella recognizes the parallel between her and Lady Isabella No one can possess the golden dress; it does the possessing.
This tale is told through the eyes of three women Constance, Lady Isabella, and Fenella. I do not believe any of the three are the star of this tale. Only the golden dress can claim that status. This is a suspenseful tale with a little romance and a lot of the supernatural. The are threads of greediness, lust, and treachery. I love the hint at time travel, I am capitative by the concept. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale, well written, great plot!
I think that the accolades accorded Ms. Cornick are warranted. Starting this book I dove right in. However I did get bogged down about the middle of the story. But I rode it out and was rewarded with a satisfying ending. I wish I could have understood the antipathy showed to the women in this story by those around them. No one seemed to care or nurture them at all. It is amazing any of them had made it to adulthood. I wish this had been more fully explained. I thought the author did a great job showing each characters point of view. Also the gown was a neat foil to tie them all together in these events.
The Woman in the Lake is a different novel than I am used to reading by this author. From 18th Century to modern day, this is a book of thrilling suspense with paranormal elements. Beginning with the gift of a beautiful gold dress, it progresses to so much more. If you are a fan of supernatural suspense, this book is for you. For myself, I will stick to more suspense and less paranormal.
Mom really enjoyed this book. This is the first Nicola Cornick novel she has read. I usually get her romance novel however this one was more of a romance, mystery and drama rolled up in one. She loves to read and this book was no exception. I know when she loves a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day and half. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Nicola Cornick novels. The book was well written and mom enjoyed the easy flow thru the story.
I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that and the author gives you.
This is definitely going to recommend this novel to the other ladies in her Beauty Shop Book Group. She enjoyed this book and it will not the last Nicola Cornick novel.
